25 March 2026. Australia. Plaza open ahead of Metro Southwest completion

Bankstown has reached a key milestone ahead of the Metro Southwest opening, with the completion of a new plaza designed to improve access, connectivity and public space around the transport interchange. The 90-metre-long, tree-lined plaza creates a new pedestrian link between Bankstown’s town centre and surrounding residential areas, while connecting directly to buses, trains and the future Metro Southwest services. Bankstown is one of the busiest transport interchanges in southwestern Sydney.

24 March 2026. United Kingdom. AtkinsRéalis secures £98 million contract to modernise rail signalling across Wessex

AtkinsRéalis has been awarded a £98.5m contract by Network Rail to upgrade signalling and telecommunications infrastructure in Wessex, southern Britain, through the Havant Relock & Re-control project. The three-year programme will be delivered by a Network Rail and AtkinsRéalis integrated project team, covering 43 kilometres of railway near Portsmouth spanning 11 stations, 10 interlockings, four level crossings and associated signalling power and telecommunications systems.

24 March 2026. Italy. Hitachi to Supply Nine Additional Frecciarossa Trains to FS Italiane

FS Italiane Group has announced the signing of a new contract with Hitachi Rail for the manufacture and supply of a set of nine new-generation Frecciarossa trains. The contract, which has been valued at around 260 million EUR, complements an agreement previously signed in 2023 concerning the supply of 36 trains, alongside 10 additional trains added following a take-off option.

Forming part of the wider Frecciarossa fleet renewal programme.

24 March 2026. United States. Largest-ever Subway car order planned in New York’s ‘golden age of transit investment’

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has invited proposals for its largest-ever Subway car contract, which could see up to 36% of the entire fleet of 6 574 cars replaced.

There is a planned base order of 1 140 R262 Subway cars to replace the R62 and R62A fleets operating on lines 1, 3 and 6, and options to purchase an additional 1 250 cars to replace the R142 and R142A cars on lines 2, 4 and 5.

23 March 2026. Asia. Taiwan Metro Alliance meets in Singapore for the first time

Singapore metro operator SMRT Corp hosted the bi-annual Taiwan Metro Alliance Meeting for the first time on March 4-6, bringing together Taipei Rapid Transit Corp, New Taipei Metro Corp, Taoyuan Metro Corp, Taichung Mass Rapid Transit Corp and Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp to discuss joint procurement initiatives, strengthening asset life cycle management and exploring innovative approaches to grow non-fare revenue. The Metro Alliance was formed in 2023.

23 March 2026. Indonesia. Salicru deploys UPS Systems at Indonesia Railways

Spain-based Salicru has expanded its presence in Indonesia by installing uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems across the national railway network operated by PT Kereta Api Indonesia. The deployment is aimed at improving operational reliability and ensuring uninterrupted power for critical railway functions. The project, implemented in partnership with PT BINA SERVICES, includes both new installations and upgrades of legacy systems across key railway hubs on the islands of Java and Sumatra.

21 March 2026. Philippines. JICA Signs EUR 157 Million Loan Manila MRT3 Rehabilitation Philippines

JICA signed a EUR 157 million loan to finance full rehabilitation of Manila’s MRT3, with completion by October 2027. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines signed a loan agreement on March 3 for the rehabilitation of Manila’s Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3). The loan provides up to EUR 157 million (¥21.6 billion) for the project. The agreement was finalized by Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go and JICA Philippines Chief Representative Baba Takashi.
