25 February 2026. Australia. Australia Begins Development for Newcastle–Sydney High-Speed Rail
The Australian Government has announced the start of development for Australia’s proposed high-speed rail line between Newcastle and Sydney. The scheme forms part of the government’s wider high-speed rail programme and plans to connect Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney with reduced journey times. Current plans indicate travel between Newcastle and central Sydney could take about one hour, while trips from the Central Coast to either city could be reduced to around 30 minutes.

24 February 2026. India. SYSTRA & DB to Provide PMC Services for India’s First High-Speed Rail Line
SYSTRA and DB Engineering & Consulting have been officially selected by the National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) to carry out the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) contract for systems on the new Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail line. The joint venture will see the companies handle a PMC assignment for the deployment of railway systems along the high-speed line, which is set to span 508 kilometres in length and serve the main business and residential centres of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

24 February 2026. Taiwan. Taiwanese high-speed fleet ATC upgrade underway
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has awarded Systra a subcontract to carry out the independent safety assessment of the Automatic Train Control system onboard unit MHI has developed for Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp’s existing fleet of 30 Series 700T trainsets.Systra’s job is to ensure the new-generation ATC complies with the EN 50126 and EN 50128 standards for reliability, availability, maintainability and safety. The new onboard unit developed for the Series 700T trainsets.

24 February 2026. Taiwan. Construction starts on New Taipei’s Keelung line
Preliminary works have started with a groundbreaking ceremony on the 15·6 km Keelung MRT light metro line that is to link Nangang high speed rail station in Taipei to the Badu area in Keelung. Construction started at the SB19 station in the Baifu Park area with placing retaining piles, constructing drainage facilities, as well as with land excavation, soil and water conservation, and landscape restoration works.

23 February 2026. United Kingdom. Permanent Way Institution (PWI) formally changes name
The Permanent Way Institution (Incorporated) has formally changed its name to the Railway Engineering Institution (Incorporated), PWI becoming RailEI. This milestone marks an important evolution for the Institution, reflecting both the breadth of railway engineering disciplines it supports and its role as a modern, inclusive Professional Engineering Institution licensed by the UK Engineering Council. The new name builds on the Institution’s 140-year-plus heritage while more clearly expressing its purpose today: to serve and support everyone involved in railway engineering.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) will finally hit the road next month after more than 10 years of delay. Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez also announced that the Metro Cebu Urban Mass Rapid Transit (UMRT), a 67.5-kilometer railway system, is now in the pipeline.

22 February 2026. India. PM Modi Inaugurates Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor and Meerut Metro System
DELHI (Metro Rail News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first complete Delhi – Meerut RRTS corridor and the country’s fastest metro system in Meerut. The Prime Minister flagged off the Namo Bharat train and Meerut Metro services from Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station. The ceremony saw the dedication of the entire 82-kilometer Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor and the inauguration of development projects worth approximately ₹12,930 crore.

The Second Tanzania Intermodal and Rail Development Project (TIRP-2), supported by a US$200 million World Bank IDA credit, aims to rehabilitate Tanzania's metre-gauge railway (MGR) network, focusing on improving safety, climate resilience, and efficiency between Dar es Salaam and Isaka. Launched in July 2025, it covers 2,707 km of track.
Responsibilities:
• Assist in the preparation of TOR and review of bid documents to avoid conflicts in contract implementation between suppliers, contractors, and consultants with TRC. The consultant shall assist TRC in developing low-risk contracts and procurement documentation that complies with relevant government and Financiers procurement policies and guidelines.
• The Consultant shall support TRC during the Pre-Contract stage, including contract evaluation and negotiations with different suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
• Develop a monitoring tool to maintain accurate contact records, including payments, insurance, and bonds/guarantees. Also, the consultant shall review and ensure that all necessary insurance, bonds, or guarantees to be provided by vendors, consultants, and contractors are in place and remain valid and up to date as required by their contracts.
• Support TRC in the establishment of a Contract Management System for the Project, to track compliance of Consultants, Suppliers, and Contractors with the terms and conditions of their contracts, and propose statistical monitoring tools to be used for monitoring.
• Assist TRC in tracking variation orders, addressing delays in performance and the reasons for them, troubleshooting problems, and completing work. In making determinations about the Contractors' claims and disputes, he/she shall collaborate closely with the Senior Project Engineer and advise the TRC as necessary.
• Preparation of monthly and quarterly reports.
• Any other tasks relating to contract management as shall be assigned by the client.

* Enabling TRC to provide open access to multiple operators on a fair and non-discriminatory basis.
