20 January 2026. Saudi Arabia. Riyadh metro Red Line extension contact awarded

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has awarded a design and build contract for an 8·4 km extension of the automated metro’s Red Line from King Saud University west to the Diriyah Gate development area. The contract announced by the RCRC on January 12 has been awarded to by a consortium led by Italy’s Webuild and including India’s L&T, Saudi Arabia’s NESMA and France’s Alstom. The extension will include 1·3 km on viaduct and 7·1 km in bored tunnel, with three of the five stations underground.

19 January 2026. Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia Railways Opens Bidding for New Passenger Trains on Northern Route

Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has launched a public tender for the manufacture of ten new passenger trains for its Northern Network. The initiative forms part of the company’s ongoing programme to develop the rail transport system and improve the efficiency of passenger services, in line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030. The tender covers the design, manufacture and supply of the trains, as well as the provision of fleet maintenance services. The inclusion of long-term maintenance is intended to support operational readiness and asset sustainability. Bids must be submitted by 11 May 2026, in accordance with the applicable public procurement regulations.

19 January 2026. Indonesia. Proposal introduced for Trans-Borneo Railway Extension

The Government of Sarawak has voiced support for extending the proposed Trans-Borneo Railway across the border into Kalimantan, Indonesia, to strengthen regional trade, mobility, and economic integration across Borneo. The planned extension is expected to improve Sarawak–Kalimantan logistics links, support bilateral trade, and promote people-to-people connectivity, particularly as regional travel demand rises ahead of major events in Borneo. The initiative aligns with wider ambitions to develop Borneo into a more integrated economic and trading region.

19 January 2026. DOTr Vows to Expedite Railway, Road Projects to Boost Philippine Economy

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is doing its best to speed up the completion of major transport infrastructure projects.Lopez said the move is in line with the order of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to translate public investments into tangible benefits for commuters and the broader economy. “Expediting the construction of transport projects means ramping up infrastructure spending to ensure that these projects will truly benefit the Filipino people,” Lopez said.

17 January 2026. United Kingdom. Indra signs £524m ‘global flagship’ contract to manage Transport for London’s ticketing systems

UK: Transport for London has appointed Indra as the next strategic and technical partner for the operation of its fare collection system, which the Spanish company said is ‘the world’s largest and most prestigious ticketing system, serving one of the most far-reaching and complex public transportation networks on the planet’.The £524m contract known as Project Proteus runs until 2034. Options and possible extensions to 2039 could take the total value to more than £845m. The signing of the contract was announced on January 16, having been delayed by an appeal submitted by incumbent contractor Cubic Transportation Systems.

16 January 2026. Singapore. Singapore’s LTA Awards First Tunnelling Contract for Downtown Line 2 Extension

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the first civil engineering contract for the Downtown Line 2 Extension (DTL2e), marking the start of major construction activity on the project. The contract, valued at approximately 326 million SGD, covers the design and construction of tunnels between the future DE1 station and the DE2 interchange station. It has been awarded to a joint venture between Woh Hup Engineering Pte Ltd and Underground Technology Engineering Construction Pte Ltd.
