Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has started a procurement process to deliver up to £1.6bn of infrastructure that will help to maintain and grow Metrolink- the UK’s largest light rail network – and improve rail accessibility within Greater Manchester. The contract covers Metrolink’s asset renewals programme, which includes replacing key infrastructure, such as track, overhead lines, and the distribution system that provides power to trams. And the new arrangement spans up to 12 years and starting in 2027.

5 August 2025. Germany. DB Begins Extensive Upgrade Works on Hamburg–Berlin Rail Line
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has commenced the general renovation of the rail corridor between Hamburg and Berlin. The nine-month construction programme involves the comprehensive modernization of the track and station infrastructure. The works are part of DB’s S3 corridor renovation programme and are being delivered by DB InfraGO. Full Closure Until Spring 2026The 278-kilometre route, one of Germany’s most heavily used lines, will remain fully closed to rail traffic until 30 April 2026. Over 170 regional replacement buses will operate across 28 routes.

5 August 2025. Singapore. Alstom to Supply Urbalis Signalling System in Singapore
Alstom has been selected to deliver a new high-capacity driverless signalling system for stations on the Land Transport Authority of Singapore’s East-West Line. The line will connect to the Thomson-East Coast Line extension (TELe). The contract covers the conversion of the Tanah Merah, Expo and Changi Airport stations to TEL, as well as the equipping of the line extension to the in-progress Changi Airport Terminal 5 station, directly connecting the TEL to Changi Airport. As part of the agreement, Alstom will provide its Urbalis CBTC system.

Mitsubishi Electric aims to provide traction systems for 266 trains, totalling 1,006 carriages, by 2031. Mitsubishi Electric has commenced the supply of traction systems for the Double-Decker New Generation (DDNG) trains operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), the Dutch railway company. The company is providing these systems to Spanish rolling-stock manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) for a total of 60 trains, which equate to 300 carriages. The initial deliveries began in July. Mitsubishi Electric aims to deliver traction systems.

Chiltern Railways has signed a 10-year agreement to lease push-pull sets of diesel locomotives and MkVa coaches from Beacon Rail for use on services between London Marylebone and Birmingham. The 13 five-coach sets of CAF-built MkVa sets, which TransPennine Express stopped using in December 2023 are scheduled to enter service with Chiltern Railways in phases from early 2026. Earlier plans to reform the fleet as six-coach sets have been dropped as too costly and complex. Procurement.

4 August 2025. Australia. Sydney Metro West Tunnelling Reaches 90% Completion
Tunnelling for the Sydney Metro West project has reached 90% completion following the arrival of two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) at the metro station site in Parramatta. Whilst TBM Dorothy reached the station site last week, TBM Betty has already begun its final stretch of tunnel excavation to Westmead following its departure from Parramatta on 17 July, having travelled 175 metres thus far. Both TBMs worked 24 hours a day, five days per week over the course of 17 months in order to build the seven-kilometre.

4 August 2025.United Kingdom. Hitachi Rail acquires rail monitoring technology provider Omnicom
The acquisition includes software and hardware for surveying, inspecting, and monitoring rail infrastructure assets. Hitachi Rail has concluded the acquisition of Omnicom, a rail monitoring technology provider, from Balfour Beatty. The deal, announced in January, is designed to grow HMAX, Hitachi Rail’s digital asset management solution. HMAX is currently deployed on more than 2,000 trains worldwide. The acquisition includes software and hardware designed for the surveying, inspection, and monitoring of rail infrastructure assets, such as overhead lines and tracks.

Amey has secured its first contract in the US market with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to deliver an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) Implementation System for the Long Island Railroad. The $2.8m (£2m) contract with the MTA will see Amey provide a range of asset management services for the Long Island Railroad, which stretches from Manhattan to Suffolk County in Long Island, making it one of the busiest commuter rails in North America, conducting over 900 trains.

Alstom is to supply SYTRAL Mobilités with 26 new-generation automatic metros worth 145 million euros and will upgrade systems and automation on line D of the Lyon metro for 158 million euros. A new phase for this historic line, the busiest in Lyon’s metro network, as part of an overall plan to modernise the network. The rolling stock and automatic control system will be developed and designed in France, with a project team based in the Lyon metropolitan area.

The first three of 16 three-section light rail vehicles that CNR Dalian (now CRRC Dalian) built under a January 2014 contract entered revenue service on the MRT3 light metro line in Manila on July 16. ‘For now, three trains with three cars each, nine cars total, will be used. We will keep working to make all of them operational after being parked for 10 years, Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said. Two more trainsets are expected to enter service later this year, according to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.

Hong Kong’s government and MTR Corp signed an agreement on July 8 covering finance and construction of two initial sections of the Northern Link project and setting an objective to complete both the main and spur lines of the project by 2034. The Part 1 agreement covers two single-station sections of the future 10·7 km Northern Link main line that connects with Hong Kong’s existing rail network: from Kam Sheung Road on the Tuen Ma Line north to Au Tau.

Job Description:
Our client is seeking an HSR Rolling Stock Expert to be responsible for managing and delivering high-speed rolling stock (250 km/hr and above) projects, and management of the PMC/the Engineer and Suppliers' deliverables during all phases of the project's life cycle.
This position requires expertise in the delivery of high-speed electric multi-unit (EMU) passenger rolling stock projects, including design management, quality management, supervision of testing & commissioning, integration, management of handover, and good knowledge in asset management for high-speed rolling stock.
Accountability Areas:
- Develop the client's Functional Specifications for High Speed Rolling Stock and ensure that these meet the functional and performance criteria agreed upon with the corresponding business units.
- Participate in the tendering process by playing an active role in reviewing technical documentation and contributing to the technical evaluation of bidders, in order to recommend the best-suited bidder to be awarded the Contract, in accordance with the client's scope of work.
- Review, comment, and approve technical submissions related to rolling stock (Specifications, Drawings, Reports, test plans, etc),
- Ensures that execution and delivery by the PMC/the Engineer and contractors alike are in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, standards, codes, and specifications, and in accordance with the plans, set budget, timelines, and scope of works.
- Identify and define constraints/risks related to design, manufacturing, testing, and delivery at an early stage, and establish and manage the mitigations.
- Participate in External Stakeholders Coordination and provide technical support where needed
- Provide factory/site visit and inspection reports to Department Management and share the work status, comments, and recommendations with other disciplinary Managers as required.
- Remain abreast with the latest trends and practices in high-speed rolling stock by performing ongoing research on emerging technologies and trends.
Job Requirements:
- Degree in Electrical or Mechanical, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in the delivery of High Speed Rolling Stock projects, including supervision of design, manufacturing, integration, testing & commissioning, and handover.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in onboard ERTMS Level 2 Signalling System ( or equivalent) design review, testing, and integration.
- Knowledge of the necessary depot equipment for the maintenance of EMU will be desirable
- Good knowledge and experience in the application of EN and UIC Standards relevant to rolling stock design, manufacturing, testing, and systems assurance.
- Experience in track infrastructure maintenance, equipment/plant design review is desirable.
