15 July 2025. Japan. Japanese railways invest in flying car company

JR East and JR Kyushu have become strategic equity partners in lightweight electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft developer SkyDrive, which also has partnerships with Osaka Metro and Kintetsu Group Holdings. SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said, ‘We are confident that integrating SkyDrive’s next-generation mobility solutions into Japan’s railway networks will enable us to deliver seamless mobility services that link ground and air transport, providing a fast and convenient customer experience.’

15 July 2025. Philippines. US backs Philippines freight railway project

The US Trade & Development Agency is to fund technical assistance to develop the planned 212 km Subic Bay – Clark – Manila – Batangas Railway, which would connect three of the Philippines’ most important ports. The project aims to decentralize port activity, ease freight congestion, and make provision for potential future passenger services. This complements the Luzon Economic Corridor programme to enhance connectivity and economic resilience across key logistics hubs. Under an agreement announced on June 26, USTDA is partnering with the Philippines’ Department of Transportation.

14 July 2025. India. Indian Railways signs MoU with DFCCIL to install AI/ML-based inspection system

This move signifies a leap towards integrating advanced technologies for service efficiency and maintenance automation in the rail sector. Indian Railways has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to implement an AI-based train safety system designed to improve the monitoring of rolling stock health. This move signifies a leap towards integrating advanced technologies for service efficiency and maintenance automation in the rail sector. The MoU was signed by India’s Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) project.

14 July 2025. Europe. Hitachi Rail & DB Cargo Launch First Automated Freight Locomotive in EU

Hitachi Rail, DB Cargo, and a number of additional partners have launched Europe’s first automated freight locomotive. The locomotive, a DB Cargo unit, has been equipped with brand-new ATO (Automatic Train Operation) and RTO (Remote Train Operation) technology, marking a major step toward a fully automated freight rail system in Europe. As technology partner for the project, the supply of the locomotive’s onboard ATO system and the general oversight of its system integration have been handled by Hitachi Rail.

14 July 2025. Brazil. Alstom Delivers First Train for São Paulo’s Line 6-Orange

Alstom has delivered the first of 22 six-car trains for São Paulo’s Line 6-Orange. Manufactured at the company’s production site in Taubaté, in São Paulo state, using Alstom Lab 4.0, the new trains will have the capacity to carry up to 2,044 passengers at speeds of up to 90 km/h. The new line is expected to carry up to 633,000 passengers per day. Each train has been manufactured from stainless steel and highlighted in orange to align with both the line’s name and visual identity, with the units being lighter when compared to those produced with carbon steel carbodys.

9 July 2025. United Kingdom. Government greenlights £92 billion investment in UK transport upgrades

The Government has given the green light to more than 50 road and rail upgrades, with millions of commuters and businesses set to benefit. Along with major road schemes including the M54 to M6 link road in Staffordshire, the M60/M62/M66 Simister Island in Greater Manchester, and the A46 Newark Bypass in Nottinghamshire, the government has announced key rail projects across the country. These include the long-awaited A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route, the delivery of three brand new train stations, and funding for a Midlands Rail Hub.

Our client is seeking an Overhead Supervisor to ensure the operational performance of all Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) is safe, reliable, and cost-effective, and that all maintenance, repairs, and associated works are completed to the company's relevant standards and customer requirements.

This role is based in Perth.

Core duties and responsibilities:

Leadership

• Provides leadership direction, guidance, technical expertise, and support in the maintenance and repair of the OLE to meet all the company's requirements and standards.

• Contributes to the strategic direction, planning, and performance, ensuring team members have clarity and understanding of expectations and standards.

• Monitors team performance against KPIs, action plans, and other measures, taking necessary action to continuously improve performance.

Supervision

• Supervises staff in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of the OLE assets, ensuring they are completed in accordance with the PTA's standards and procedures.

• Monitors and assesses staff competence and identifies training requirements to ensure repairs and maintenance activities of OLE are carried out safely, effectively, and in accordance with best practice.

• Assists in the investigation and reporting of all OLE incidents and prepares technical reports on maintenance and repair activities to ensure maximum effectiveness of the systems.

• Inspects all relevant site records and documents to ensure they are accurately managed in accordance with the legislative and obligatory requirements.

• Monitors the quality and quantity of all work undertaken by contract or internal resources, ensuring it is completed as planned and provides recommendations where appropriate.

• Assists in the inspection and assessment of claims by contractors and provides informed recommendations

Job Requirements:

Core Competencies

• Possession of Certificate III in ESI – Power Systems - Rail Traction and extensive experience and demonstrated knowledge in maintenance and construction of OLE for 25kV AC Electrified railway.

• Demonstrated experience in management and application of 25kV AC OLE maintenance and construction techniques.

• Substantial experience and demonstrated knowledge of restoration of de-wiring in 25kV AC Urban electrified railway.

• Good experience and understanding of the capabilities of major tools and machinery required for maintenance and construction of 25kV AC OLE in an electrified railway environment.

Overhead Line Engineer, Perth, Australia

Job Description:

Our client is seeking an Overhead Line Engineer to provide engineering advice and support for the maintenance, design, construction, upgrades and modifications of 25kV Overhead Line Equipment and be responsible for checking and reviewing the operational performance of all the Overhead Line Equipment systems including the planning and scheduling of all maintenance and repairs and provides recommendations to the Principal Electrical Engineer.

This role is based in Perth.

Core duties and responsibilities:

Management and Leadership:

- Monitors and assists to ensure maintenance plans are carried out in a safe, reliable and cost effective manner and resources are available to meet technical requirements.

- Provides support and carries out inspections and tests, reviews, investigates, checks and analyses equipment/systems failures and incidents, prepares technical reports and assists with the development of solutions and improvements as necessary to guide maintenance activities, either individually or as a member of a team.

- Undertakes audits on Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) and related infrastructure for the client's rail network.

- Plans and monitors maintenance, repairs, and construction activities as directed by the Principal Electrical Engineer and in conjunction with the Overhead Catenary Superintendent.

- Records and analyses performance and productivity data and provides recommendations to the Principal Electrical Engineer for appropriate corrective actions for improvements.

Technical

- Provides engineering advice and support for 25kV OLE maintenance, design, construction, upgrades, and modifications to the existing network.

- Participates and provides recommendations in the commissioning of new equipment, systems, and technology, including testing of OLE network as Test Engineer or as Witnessing Engineer for the Contractor's testing and commissioning.

- Carries out OLE designs to comply with the client's design principles and codes.

- Reviews and provides recommendations of OLE designs & modifications, ensures adherence to the relevant technical standards, safety standards and industry standards.

- Provides relevant technical guidance and reviews/updates technical documents and maintenance procedures.

- Reviews and contributes to the development of technical specifications, engineering maintenance instructions, service schedules, work practices, type approvals, drawings and associated OH Systems documentation to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.

Project / Contract Management:

- Assists with managing high-value and high-risk projects, coordinates and plans in-house teams and/or contractors undertaking design and/or construction of railway OLE installations.

Liaison and Customer Service:

- Liaises with other sections of the company to ensure the effective working of the network.

Training and Development:

- Reviews and provides recommendations to training manuals and procedures, and participates in conducting training for the Overhead Linespersons to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations.

Other:

- Carries out as required, such tasks and functions that are within the limits of the employee's skills, competence, and training.

Job Requirements:

- Possession of a tertiary qualification in electrical engineering or equivalent recognised by the Institute of Engineers Australia.

- Demonstrated competence in 25kV OLE design and maintenance and proven knowledge of rail safety.

- Demonstrated experience in managing and leading teams in the planning, design, and construction of OLE infrastructure to achieve agreed outcomes.

- Demonstrated understanding or skills in contract and project management.
