6 June 2024. Australia. Inland Rail CEO: Project progressing well

At the Roads Australia Leaders’ Lunch in Sydney, Inland Rail CEO, Nick Miller, discussed the nation-building project, saying that it will be well worth the wait – comparable to previous major rail projects in Australian history. Mr Miller said that history has shown that Australian rail mega-projects take time to deliver, referencing the completion of the standard gauge line from Alice Springs to Darwin, where the initial announcement of the line was made in 1983, but the first trains did not run on the line until 2004.

6 June 2024. India. Alstom Delivers First Train for Pune Metro Line 3

Alstom has successfully delivered the first Metropolis metro train for Line 3 of the Pune Metro under a 2021 contract with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). To deliver the elevated Pune Metro Line 3, PMRDA contracted a joint venture formed of Alstom India, TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited, and Siemens Project Ventures to supply the rolling stock, electrical, and mechanical system works.

5 June 2024. Japan. Japanese high speed rail freight services expand

The increasing use of high speed passenger trains to carry light freight was highlighted by a fair at Tokyo station on May 17 where products now being transported to the capital by Shinkansen were available for purchase. The rail services have benefited from a national shortage of commercial vehicle drivers, as well as laws introduced on April 1 which limit overtime working, with the cost to the consumer of delivering parcels by road reported to have increased by up to 20%.

4 June 2024. Australia. Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 receives $2B to begin construction

Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 is set to begin construction with a $2 billion investment from the New South Wales Government. The investment comes as part of the 2024-25 State Budget and follows recent New South Wales Planning Approval for the project, as well as Federal Environmental Approval. The game-changing transport project will unlock development potential and deliver frequent and reliable public transport options for residents that moved into fast-growing suburbs like Wentworth Point.

4 June 2024. DR Congo. Alstom to support Kinshasa urban rail project

Alstom has signed a memorandum of understanding to co-operate with Africa Finance Corp in the development of the 300 km MetroKin urban rail project in fast-growing Kinshasa. The announcement on May 30 came after an official visit to France by DR Congo President Félix Tshisekedi in April. It follows on from AFC’s agreement with Trans Connexion Congo to develop a mass transit system in four phases. The first phase would be a line from Kinshasa Centrale station to N’Djili International Airport, using part of the existing 1 067 mm gauge railway which would be significantly modernised.

3 June 2024. United Kingdom. Siemens’ British battery trains set to save £3.5bn and consign diesel trains to history

Siemens Mobility has calculated that its new battery bi-mode trains could save Britain’s railways £3.5 billion and 12 million tonnes of CO2 over 35 years. The trains, which would be assembled at Siemens Mobility’s new Train Manufacturing Facility in Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, would be powered by overhead wires on already electrified routes, then switch to battery power where there are no wires.

3 June 2024. Global. Hitachi Rail completes Thales GTS’ takeover following major deal

Hitachi Rail has completed the nearly 1.7 billion euro acquisition of Thales’ Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) business as of May 31. This acquisition expands Hitachi Rail’s operations to 51 countries, with a significant portion of its revenue now coming from signalling and systems. The acquisition strengthens Hitachi Rail’s role in the global mobility sector, focusing on promoting public transport through digitalisation.

31 March 2024. Brazil. Work begins on major $2.7bn rail project in São Paulo, Brazil

The state of São Paulo, Brazil will soon have a major new rail connection between two of its biggest cities after the governor approved a 14.2bn reais ($2.7bn) contract. The Intercity Eixo Norte project will connect the state’s capital São Paulo with its third largest city Campinas via Jundiaí with a 101km rail line carrying an express service.

This role is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Job Purpose: The Senior Project Manager for Locomotive and Wagon Manufacturing; and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of projects related to locomotive and wagon manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul. This role involves planning, executing, and finalizing projects within budget and according to strict deadlines. The Senior Project Manager will lead a team, coordinate resources, manage contracts, mitigate risks, ensure quality, and maintain effective communication with stakeholders to achieve project success.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Project Planning and Scheduling:

- Develop comprehensive project plans outlining scope, goals, deliverables, and timelines in collaboration with stakeholders.

- Estimate resource requirements and allocate personnel effectively to meet project objectives.

- Utilize project management tools and techniques to create schedules and monitor progress.

2. Project Execution and Management:

- Lead project execution ensuring adherence to quality standards, safety regulations, and contractual requirements.

- Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and resources to achieve project goals.

- Implement strategies to mitigate project risks and address issues promptly to maintain project momentum.

3. Contract and Vendor Management:

- Oversee contract negotiations, administration, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

- Manage relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and consultants to ensure delivery of goods and services according to contractual obligations.

- Handle change orders, claims, and disputes effectively to protect the interests of the company.

4. Team Leadership and Development:

- Provide clear direction, guidance, and support to project team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

- Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and performance metrics to evaluate team performance and identify areas for improvement.

- Mentor and coach team members to enhance their skills, capabilities, and professional development.

5. Stakeholder Communication and Relationship Management:

- Establish and maintain effective communication channels with stakeholders, including senior management, clients, regulatory authorities, and project team members.

- Regularly update stakeholders on project status, progress, milestones, and key decisions.

- Proactively address stakeholder concerns, requests, and feedback to ensure project alignment with stakeholder expectations.

6. Documentation and Reporting:

- Maintain accurate and comprehensive project documentation, including project plans, schedules, budgets, meeting minutes, and correspondence.

- Prepare and present regular project reports, including financial status, schedule variance, risk assessment, and lessons learned.

- Ensure project documentation is organized, accessible, and archived appropriately for future reference and audit purposes.

7. Risk Management:

- Identify, assess, and manage project risks to minimize potential impact on project objectives.

- Monitor risk triggers and implement corrective actions as necessary to maintain project success.

8. Quality Assurance:

9. Cost Management:

Proof checking of the designs of stations, Viaduct, Depot, Architecture, E&M, Roofing works for this corridor including all the works of finalizing the Alignment Planning, Preparation and processing of tender documents for the depot civil and other works shall be in the scope of GC.
