31 March 2024. India. Batteries provide emergency power for Kashmir railway tunnels

Saft has supplied more than 30 sets of ReGenPro batteries to provide standby power for operational and safety systems in the tunnels on the Banihal – Sangaldan section of the Udhampur – Kashmir railway. The 48·1 km section was opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February. It runs through challenging mountainous terrain with intense seismic activity and winter temperatures down to -20°C. It has 16 bridges and 11 tunnels totalling more than 43 km, including the 12·8 km tunnel T50 which is the longest on the Indian rail network.

28 March 2024. Australia. New Sydney CBD metro station 95 per cent complete

Works on the Martin Place Metro Station are now 95 per cent complete meaning Sydney passengers will soon have access to a fully integrated transport destination that will provide metro services beyond Chatswood, through the CBD and out to Sydenham. The final stage of construction has seen the two station entrances evolve and take shape, the direct connection to the existing Martin Place train station completed and the first portion of Martin Place plaza reopened. A 40m-high atrium is being unveiled as hoarding is coming down and temporary covers are being removed.

28 March 2024. Canada. Metrolinx Awards Service Contract to Siemens Mobility

Siemens Mobility has been awarded a further service contract from Canadian operator, Metrolinx in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. This contract will see Siemens Mobility handle the track, signal, and right-of-way maintenance for the Central Region of Toronto’s passenger railway infrastructure system. This builds on Siemens Mobility’s existing maintenance service contract with Metrolinx covering the West Region and signal and communications services at the Metrolinx Network Operations Center.

28 March 2024. South Korea. Seoul Metro to operate GTX-A when it opens on March 30

Seoul Metro has been selected as operator for Line A of the capital’s Great Train Express commuter rail network, ahead of the opening of the first section on March 30. When complete, the 82 km line with 11 stations will link Unjeong in the northwestern suburb of Paju with Dongtan in the southeast of the Seoul conurbation. The line is scheduled to open in stages, with the initial 28 km section running between Suseo and Dongtan.

27 March 2024. Australia. Cross River Rail underground station progresses

Cross River Rail’s Roma Street underground station is well underway with installation complete on a number of escalators architectural finishes, marking great strides in the completion of a massive station that will be at the centre of the new major transport interchange. Six of the eight escalators along the station’s underground platform have been installed, while four of the 20 escalators that passengers will use to travel to surface level are also in place. Various architectural finishes are also now visible, including panels for the station’s permanent walls and final touches to the baffle ceilings, which will help absorb sound in the massive underground space.

Transport for the North (TfN) has published an ambitious plan for sustainable and inclusive economic growth in the North, enabled by transformational connectivity. The new Strategic Transport Plan (STP), approved at a TfN board meeting in Leeds, outlines plans for a transformational transport infrastructure that could bring an additional £118 billion to the Northern economy by 2050.

25 March 2024. United Kingdom. CrossCountry plans to transform customer experience by May 2025

Long-distance train operator CrossCountry has secured a further five Voyager trains from rolling stock company Beacon Rail in a significant boost for capacity. The five trains come in addition to the seven extra Voyager trains secured in October. The 12 extra trains – totalling 60 additional carriages – will strengthen CrossCountry’s long-distance services from May 2025, increasing capacity on north-south routes by over 36,000 seats per week. Combined with a new timetable proposed from May 2025, rail users will see more services as well as longer trains across the network – particularly on CrossCountry’s busy Reading to Newcastle corridor.
