17 April 2024. Australia. $400M stage 3 Shepparton rail line upgrades

Track improvements in Nagambie and Wahring in Victoria have been delivered as part of the $400 million Stage 3 Shepparton Line Upgrade project, jointly funded by the Federal and Victorian Governments. The Federal Government has committed $320 million to the Stage 3 works. Crews have replaced more than 13km of ageing wooden track with 15,000 new concrete sleepers, while adding more than 35,000t of new ballast along the line.

17 April 2024. United States. California High-Speed Rail Releases RFP for Electric Train Contract

The California High-Speed Rail Authority has approved the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to procure its electrified high-speed trains. These units will be the first trains in the US to operate at speeds of up to 220 miles per hour. The Authority will now request proposals from Alstom and Siemens Mobility, who were selected as the two prequalified shortlisters following a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) in 2023.

17 April 2024. Germany. Germany’s first Siemens battery trains in use

Regional transport in the Ortenau region of Germany is has taken the next step to becoming even more environmentally friendly, thanks to the introduction of Siemens Mobility’s Mireo Plus B battery hybrid trains. Initially running on routes from Offenburg to Bad Griesbach, the new trains are coming in to replace the diesel-powered Regio Shuttle RS1, before being gradually extended further across the network.

16 April 2024. United States. Chicago Metra Launches $332 Million Construction Plan for 2024

Chicago’s commuter rail system, Metra, has announced a comprehensive list of construction projects planned for 2024. This programme includes major projects such as the replacement of ageing bridges on the UP North Line, as well as track, electrical and signal upgrades on the Metra Electric line. Meanwhile, the plan also includes numerous smaller infrastructure improvements across all of Metra’s 11 lines.

16 April 2024. Philippines. More Metro Manila Subway loans agreed

Finance Secretary Ralph Recto and Japan International Cooperation Agency Chief Representative Takema Sakamoto signed a ¥150bn loan agreement on March 26 for the third tranche of financing for Phase 1 of the Metro Manila Subway Project. MMSP Phase 1 is being supported by two previous loan agreements with JICA: the first worth ¥104·5bn was signed in March 2018, and the second for ¥253·3m was finalised in February 2022. The total cost of the first phase of MMSP is 488·5bn pesos.

16 April 2024. Canada. SkyTrain station contractors selected

The Province of British Columbia has selected the South Fraser Station Partners consortium of Acciona, Aecon and Pomerleau as ‘preferred proponent’ to design and build the stations for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain Project to extend Vancouver’s automated light metro network. The Expo Line is to be extended southeast by 16 km along the Fraser Highway from King George station in Surrey to 203 Street in Langley city centre. Projections envisage that the population of Surrey and Langley will increase by 420 000 between now and 2050, and a further 147 000 jobs will be created, increasing the demand for mass transport. Financial close for the project is expected in the second quarter of 2024.

16 April 2024. Serbia. Belgrade renews contract with RATP Dev for metro

The city of Belgrade, in Serbia, has extended its contract with RATP Dev for “Early Operator Assistance” for the upcoming three lines of the city’s metro system. The renewal follows a “Memorandum of Understanding” signed in September 2023 between the Serbian capital and RATP Dev, aiming to strengthen their collaboration and ensure the metro system meets international standards.

16 April 2024. Tanzania. Tanzania rail project gets $200m from World Bank

The World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) has approved $200m in funding for a project to improve the safety, resilience and efficiency of a railway line in Tanzania between Dar es Salaam and Isaka. The project, which is the second phase of the Tanzania Intermodal Rail and Development Plan (TIRP), will include the refurbishment or rehabilitation of around 470km of railway track on the line and the installation of climate defences such as flood control systems.

16 April 2024. Spain. Talgo’s new “very high speed” trains delivered

Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Talgo has delivered the first of its new Avril “very high speed” trains to Spain’s national rail provider Renfe. Talgo said the new trains have increased capacity with reduced weight, meaning it can reduce power used and improve efficiency, according to the manufacturer. “Avril is Talgo’s most advanced train and will become a quality benchmark of the very high-speed rail segment,” the company said.

15 April 2024. Australia. Next stage of Inland Rail works to begin in VIC

Early works are set to begin on the Beveridge to Albury – Tranche 2 section, which involves work on a number of sites on the existing North East rail line to allow for the safe passage of double-stacked freight trains. Works will take place at Benalla, Euroa, Wandong, Hume Freeway, Tallarook, Hume Freeway, Seymour, and three sites in Broadford, and will include geotechnical investigations, ground water monitoring and additional surveys, as well as development of key management plans.

15 April 2024. United Kingdom. New trains enter service on Birmingham’s Cross City Line

Passengers on Birmingham’s iconic Cross City Line have been travelling on a brand new train fleet for the first time today (Monday 15 April). Train operator West Midlands Railway (WMR) said the introduction of the Class 730 fleet represents the start of a new era for rail travel on the line, which is used by millions of passengers every year and connects Birmingham with destinations including Lichfield, Redditch, and Bromsgrove.
