18 May 2023. Canada. Vancouver SkyTrain extension shortlists

Shortlists have now been announced for all three of the major works contracts for the Surrey Langley Extension of Vancouver’s SkyTrain automated light metro network. The project will extend the Expo Line by 16 km along Fraser Highway from King George station to 203 Street in Langley city centre, with eight stations. The three design and build contracts will cover the guideway, the stations, and the systems and track, including power supplies and telecoms.

17 May 2023. Germany. Deutsche Bahn places massive order for ICE trains, second-largest in company history

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has ordered a total of 73 new long-distance (ICE) trains. The move represents an investment of some 2 billion euros and marks the second-largest single purchase of trains in the company’s history. Spanish manufacturer Talgo is the main beneficiary. Talgo will manufacture 56 low-floor ICE-L trains while Siemens Mobility will produce another 17 ICE 3neo units. The new trains will be delivered from 2026 onwards through 2030. The order placed with Talgo has a value of 1.4 billion euros, the purchase at Siemens is to the tune of 600 million euros.

17 May 2023. United Kingdom. Landmark relationship charter signed by LNER, Agility Trains, and Hitachi Rail

London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Agility Trains, and Hitachi Rail have signed a pioneering agreement that will define how the three organisations collaborate over the next three decades. The Relationship Charter is a commitment to a set of values and behaviours shared between LNER, Agility Trains and Hitachi Rail to ensure the best possible collaboration for the benefit of customers. It is designed to create an on-going open and collaborative culture between the three organisations, at every level of interaction, for the remaining 23 years of the existing contracts and potentially beyond.

16 May 2023. Italy. RFI Awards Contracts to Construct Additional High-Speed Rail Lines

A consortium consisting of Webuild, Ghella and Impresa Pizzarotti has been awarded two Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) contracts to construct additional high-speed rail lines in Italy. These new contracts have a combined value of more than 3.7 billion EUR. The first contract is valued at over 2.0 billion EUR. It covers the construction of a section of high-speed railway along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria axis: Lot 1A between Battipaglia and Romagnano.

15 May 2023. United Kingdom. UK rail passenger numbers on a record post-Covid high

Passenger numbers on Britain’s railways have approached and exceeded levels seen before the pandemic. Despite significantly changed passenger behaviour, with much less peak hours commuting, the railways are proving as busy as ever. Reported UK government figures say that patronage averaged over 98 per cent daily in April, with 101-106 per cent for 14 days of the month. Source: RailTech.com

 

15 May 2023. Australia. Construction continues on Canberra’s light rail

Construction on Canberra’s biggest ever transport infrastructure project is ramping up, with the ACT Government building a new side-track over London Circuit in preparation for the delivery of its Light Rail Stage 2A. Trucks carrying fill will start arriving on site from 15 May 2023, which will be used to build the new side track – allowing motorists to continue using Commonwealth Avenue while work progresses on raising the London Circuit. Around 60,000m³ of material will be required to create the level intersection between Commonwealth Avenue and London Circuit.

15 May 2023. South Africa. Gauteng resignalling project completed

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has completed the resignalling of its suburban rail network in Gauteng province, serving Johannesburg and Pretoria. Underway since 2011, the two-stage project is the largest signalling project carried out on the network, according to main contractor Siemens Mobility. The programme also included a pilot installation of ETCS at seven stations.

14 May 2023. India. SYSTRA Wins Kochi Metro Phase 2’s Electrification DDC Contract

SYSTRA MVA Consulting on Tuesday was declared as the lowest bidder for the Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract of Kochi Metro Phase 2‘s Third Rail electrification system. This consultancy contract by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) is the fourth significant pre-construction contract for Kochi’s Phase 2 which will feature a 11.2 km new elevated corridor, named Pink Line, with 11 stations connecting JLN Stadium – Kakkanad – Infopark (Smart City).
