​8 March 2023. United States. Crosstown Partners awarded New York Subway CBTC contract

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded the Crosstown Partners consortium of Thales and TC Electric a contract to supply communications-based train control for the Subway’s Crosstown Line (G), which runs 18 km from Brooklyn to Queens with 21 stations. Thales will supply its SelTrac CBTC and maintain it for 25 years, with construction contractor TC Electric undertaking the associated modifications to the track, signalling and communications. The project is expected to take almost five years to complete.

6 March 2023. Italy. Alstom opens new rail electrification equipment production site in Italy

The Valmadrera site is equipped to develop and manufacture power transmission components for railway, metro and tram lines. Alstom has launched a new production plant in Valmadrera, Lecco, Italy to make electrification equipment for the railway sector for both the Italian and foreign markets. Covering an area of 9800m2, the Valmadrera site is equipped to develop and manufacture power transmission components for railway, metro and tram lines.

3 March 2023. Philippines. Mitsubishi awarded $US 1.9bn Manila North-South Commuter Railway contract

THE Philippines Department of Transportation (DOTr) has signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) to deliver integrated railway systems for the extension of the Manila North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR). The Yen 260bn ($US 1.914bn) contract was signed on March 3. The contract covers a 110km line with 27 stations, comprising the 55km southern section from Tutuban to Calamba, in Laguna province, and the 51km northern section from Malolos to Clark International Airport, in Pampanga province.

2 March 2023. Australia. Gamuda to acquire Downer transport projects arm

Malaysian engineering group Gamuda has signed a binding agreement to acquire Downer EDI’s Australian Transport Projects division, continuing its expansion into the Australian market. Local subsidiary Gamuda Australia has already expanded from around 50 employees to almost 400 in less than a year, and the company last year won three major contracts totalling more than A$3·3bn, including the Sydney Metro West Western Tunnelling Package.

1 March 2023. Japan. JR East presents first Series E8 high speed train

East Japan Railway has unveiled the first of its 300 km/h Series E8 high speed trainsets, which have been ordered for use on services between Tokyo, Fukushima, Yamagata and Shinjo via the Yamagata mini-Shinkansen. The small-profile trains are intended to replace the 275 km/h Series E3 sets that entered service between 1995 and 2009. The new trains have a 9 m long nose section designed to minimise noise when traversing tunnels at higher speeds.

27 February 2023. United Arab Emirates. Work completes on UAE’s national railway network

The UAE has completed work on its national railway network, which is anticipated to serve as a key part of the global supply network. UAE National Rail Network’s main line spreads from Ghuweifat on the border of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Fujairah. Since January 2016, stage one of the national railway network has been operating at its full potential. The project’s stage two commenced in early 2020.

27 February 2023. Australia. High Speed Rail Authority recruiting Board members

The newly established High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA), an extension of the Federal Government, has begun recruiting board members to assist in the development of Australia’s high-speed rail network. Board members will be selected through a merit-based process, including the Chair, to ensure the board is composed of people who have the appropriate skills, qualifications, knowledge and experience to best bring high speed rail to reality. Applicants will be assessed by a Federal Government selection panel against specific criteria.

27 February 2023. France. France to invest €100bn in rail upgrades by 2040

France is reportedly looking to spend around €100bn by 2040 to improve its rail transport in the country. This initiative is mainly aimed at extending and upgrading the rail network besides supporting the government’s goal of lowering carbon emissions. According to France Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, the funding will help roll out express commuter trains that are analogous to the Paris RER system in major cities. This rail project will be implemented by the government with investments along with national train operator SNCF, European Union and local governments.

26 February 2023. India. L&T Lowers Delhi Metro Silver Line’s 1st Tunnel Boring Machine DZ1122

Larsen & Toubro on Thursday & Friday lowered TBM DZ1122 – the first ever tunnel boring machine at Chhatarpur Station of Delhi Metro’s 23.622 km Silver Line which will connect Aerocity – Tughalakabad via 16 stations. L&T’s team had assembled this CRCHI earth pressure balance (EPB) machine’s cutterhead and shields, weighing 470 tonnes, adjacent to the TBM launch shaft. It was carefully lifted and moved 26m horizontally, and then lowered 22m vertically into the shaft using a strand jack “mega lift” system specially designed for Delhi Metro Phase 4 project’s 6.51 km Package DC-09 (Kishangarh – Saket G Block).

23 February 2023. Australia. Hyundai Rotem Close to Landing Big Train Order from Australia

A consortium led by Hyundai Rotem and Downer, an Australian transportation company, was selected in early February as the preferred bidder for a railway project promoted by the Queensland government in Australia. The large-scale project is worth a total of US$7.1 billion. Hyundai Rotem will be in charge of manufacturing electric locomotives.
