21 October 2025. South Africa. South Africa's Transnet to invest $7 billion in rail and port upgrades

South Africa’s state-owned freight and logistics company Transnet plans to invest 127 billion rand ($7.3 billion) over the next five years to modernise its rail network and upgrade key ports. Transnet Chief Executive Michelle Phillips said the company invested 24 billion rand in infrastructure last year and has budgeted 25 billion rand for the current financial year. She said the company will seek both partners and financiers for key infrastructure projects, including the Richards Bay dry-bulk terminal and the Pier 2 container concession in Durban, according to Reuters.

20 October 2025. Saudi Arabia. Liebherr-Transportation to Provide HVAC Systems for Saudi-Bound Stadler DMUs

Liebherr-Transportation Systems has confirmed it will supply HVAC systems for a fleet of new Stadler Intercity diesel multiple units (DMUs) destined for operation in Saudi Arabia. The new units will enter service on the country’s extended east-west corridor, with services set to be operated by Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR). The vehicle contract consists of ten train sets, each featuring five passenger coaches and two power cars, with an additional option for ten train sets.

20 October 2025. India. India’s Digital Transformation Strategy for Rail Presented at WDF

At the recent Wayside Digitalization Forum (WDF), Dr ShobhanChowdhury, Advisor for R&D and Science & Technology at the DelhiMetroRailCorporation and formerly with IndianRailways, delivered a keynote outlining Indias rapid push for digital transformation in its railway sector. Dr Chowdhury described the scale, challenges and strategic impetus behind India’s plan to modernize one of the world’s largest rail networks. Indian Railways consists of approximately 401,000 kilometers of track. The network serves more than 10,000 passenger trains per day

20 October 2025. Germany. DB launches Talgo ICE L high speed trainsets featuring step-free boarding

DB and manufacturer Talgo ceremonially launched the ICE L inter-city trainset at Berlin Ostbahnhof on October 17. The fleet’s entry into revenue service is due with the December timetable change. The unveiling was attended by Evelyn Palla, CEO of DB AG; Michael Peterson, DB Board Member for Long-Distance Passenger Transport; Patrick Schnieder, Federal Minister of Transport; and Carlos de Palacio y Oriol, Executive Chairman of Talgo. A framework contract was signed between Talgo and DB in February 2019 for up to 100 Talgo 230 trainsets.

20 October 2025. Iran. Mapna to supply 60 light rail vehicles for Mashhad Line 1

Mapna Group’s rolling stock business Wagon Pars has won a contract to supply 60 light rail vehicles for Mashhad Urban Railway’s light metro Line 1. The manufacturer said the three-car LRVs would be a ‘a sophisticated type of electric multiple-unit’, designed for tight curves. An initial section of light metro Line 1 opened in 2011, with 10·5 km underground and 8·5 km at grade. It was extended by 4·5 km to the airport in 2016.

17 October 2025. Australia. Melbourne’s first G Class tram arrives at purpose-built depot

Victoria’s Minister for Public & Active Transport Gabrielle Williams has officially opened the Maidstone depot in Melbourne where Alstom will maintain 100 G Glass trams which it is supplying for the world’s largest tram network. The first of the trams has now arrived at the site for testing of the braking systems, accessibility features and overall reliability, ahead of trials on the network later this year. The low-floor trams are to be rolled out on routes 57, 59 and 82 from 2026

17 October 2025. Australia. Armadale Line reopens

The highly anticipated full Armadale Line is now open, extending eight kilometers to Byford to support one of Perth’s fastest growing residential areas. The METRONET Byford Rail Extension project has delivered a brand-new train station in Byford, a new world class elevated station in Armadale and removed nine pedestrian and road level crossings providing a much-improved connection to our public transport system as the local population continues to grow.

17 October 2025. Canada. Metrolinx and Ontario Government Seek Design Partners for Yonge North Subway Extension

Metrolinx and the Ontario Government have begun their search for design partners to both design and build the five new stations making up the Yonge North Subway Extension. The project aims to bring TTC Line 1 subway service eight kilometres further north from Finch Station into the York Region, construction new stations in Toronto, Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill in the process. package also includes the construction of emergency exit buildings and a train storage facility.

17 October 2025. United States. Skyline segment two extension opens four railway stations in Honolulu

The new segment links the airport with other major locations on the island. Honolulu’s Skyline rail system in Hawaii has commenced public service on its segment two route, marking the launch of four new stations to the route. The announcement was made by Hitachi Rail, the City and County of Honolulu, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART), and the City’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS). The expansion includes Makalapa Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Lelepaua Daniel K Inouye International Airport.

Our client is seeking an ETCS Systems Integration Director to work in Brisbane.

This is an estimated two (2) year contract, and this job closes on 30th October 2025 at 2pm (Brisbane time).

The ETCS System Integrator (SI) Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for the successful delivery of the System Integration function for the Sector 1 North (S1N) project for the client. The Systems Integration function includes all activities required to support the successful delivery of the ETCS Sector 1 North project, which will deliver the signalling component of The Wave (Rail) project, together with the ETCS Level 2 Integration function across the entire Sector 1 corridor (including the digital radio system and Section 1 South).

This pivotal role is responsible for driving the end-to-end integration, deployment, and commissioning of ETCS Level 2 across the railway network, ensuring alignment with the strategic objectives, the various infrastructure projects in delivery, and stakeholder expectations.

Reporting to the executive leadership, the ETCS SI Director will oversee a multidisciplinary SI team - ensuring performance, accountability, and delivery - while serving as the primary focal point for both internal and external stakeholders.

Job Requirements:

Mandatory qualifications and conditions

- Postgraduate qualifications in engineering and/or project management.

- Professional accreditation (e.g. CPEng, CPPM) and active membership of relevant industry associations.

Requirements of the role

- Rail Industry Expertise: Extensive experience (15+ years) in the Australian railway industry, ideally with direct involvement in ETCS or other large-scale rail technology/system and signalling projects. Deep understanding of the Australian rail regulatory and operational environment.

- Major Project Leadership: Proven experience in a Project Director or Technical Director capacity, leading large, complex, multidisciplinary rail systems projects with multi-year delivery timelines and significant stakeholder interfaces.

- Rail Engineering Experience: Experience across the full systems engineering lifecycle, from requirements definition through to commissioning of safety-critical and high-reliability systems. Experience in the application of systems assurance and RAMS processes in complex projects.

- Systems Integration Experience: Proven experience in leading or working within Engineering or Systems Integration teams, and deep technical understanding of rail systems integration, including signalling, communications, and safety assurance practices. Adept at systems thinking.

- Leadership and Team Building: Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and inspire high-performing teams, with a strong personal commitment to safety, collaboration, and delivering outcomes.

- Stakeholder Management: Exemplary skills in engaging, influencing, and negotiating with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government entities, regulators, suppliers, and operators.

- Change Leadership: Proven track record in leading organisation-wide change and operational transformation, particularly within a live rail environment.
