14 August 2024. United Kingdom. London tunnel reopens after major water damage repair
A 175-year-old tunnel has reopened following a major ten-week repair program. Blackheath Tunnel in southeast London received £10 million for essential repairs, which were delivered by Network Rail along with its partner the Southern Integrated Delivery (SID). The mile-long tunnel, which opened in 1849, required extensive work to its lining, with leaks and water damage causing around 1000 minutes of delays to Southeastern services over the last year.

13 August 2024. United Kingdom. Network Rail Announces Up to £1.3bn in Contracts
Network Rail has announced up to 1.3 billion GBP in contracts for work on Scotland’s Railway over the next five years. The contracts will be awarded to five organizations to ensure Scotland’s Railway remains safe and reliable. This includes Taziker Industrial, AmcoGiffen, STORY, and QTS. In addition, VolkerRail will receive its first major contract on Scotland’s Railway. The contracts will fund buildings, civils, structures, earthworks, drainage, renewals, and enhancement projects.

13 August 2024. Australia. Western Sydney Airportstation designs unveiled
The proposed design of four stations and precincts along the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport alignment has been revealed. The next stage in the planning process includes the designs for the St Marys Metro Station and Precinct, Orchard Hills Metro Station and Precinct, Luddenham Precinct, Bradfield Metro Station and Precinct, and active transport for the whole alignment.
Community members are now invited to provide feedback on the proposed designs, with the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Stage Two Place, Urban Design, and Corridor Landscape Plan on display until Sunday, September 8, 2024.

12 August 2024. Germany. Stadler to Present CITYLINK Tram-Train at InnoTrans 2024
At InnoTrans 2024, Stadler will present the first complete CITYLINK tram train ordered by a German-Austrian consortium for the ‘VDV Tram-Train’ project. In 2022, Stadler was selected by a group of six transport companies for the ‘VDV Tram-Train project.The vehicles will be delivered to VBK – Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe GmbH, AVG – Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH, Saarbahn Netz GmbH, Schiene Oberösterreich GmbH, Schiene Salzburg GmbH and Zweckverband Regional-Stadtbahn Neckar-Alb.

12 August 2024. India. India’s rail expansion continues under PM Modi’s watchful eye
Eight new projects are slated to be completed by 2030. Eight new rail projects have been given the go-ahead by a key government committee in India, overseen by contentious but recently returned Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Indian Railways, the country’s national rail provider and infrastructure management organization, 900km and 64 stations will be added to the national network.

9 August 2024. Vietnam. Hanoi Metro Line 3 Commences Passenger Service
Alstom has celebrated the start of revenue service on the elevated section of Hanoi Metro Line 3 on 8 August 2024. Operated by Hanoi Metro Company (HMC), the line is now available for free public trials and will be officially inaugurated in September 2024. This project marks the deployment of Alstom’s first fully integrated metro system in Vietnam. Once fully completed, the Hanoi Metro Line 3 project will span 12.5 kilometers and include 12 stations, enhancing connectivity for 1.6 million residents across six districts in Hanoi. The initial stage of the line covers 8.5 kilometers, featuring eight elevated stations. Upon completion, the metro system is expected to handle a peak capacity of 23,900 passengers per hour in each direction.

9 August 2024. Philippines. Asian Development Bank to support Philippines rail projects
The bank will act as a transaction adviser for a new metro contract and the development of an intermodal fare system.The Philippines’ Department of Transportation (DOTr) has brought in the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to act as an advisor for two of its rail projects, including a nationwide automated fare collection system. ADB will serve as transaction advisor for the projects, assisting the development and selection of a private partner for the fare system, and supporting the engagement of a rail operator for the renewal of Manila’s 17km metro rail transport line 3 (MRT3, the Yellow Line).

Our client is seeking 8x Communications Systems Technicians to work in Perth, Western Australia.
The Communications Systems Technician will be responsible for maintaining (by carrying out routine procedures and fault rectification procedures) an effective and efficient level of operating performance on the various Communications Systems and associated equipment on the client's network and the integration with train control systems, field signalling and telecommunications systems.
Core duties and responsibilities Management
* Supervises contractors engaged in communications systems maintenance activities.
Technical
* Maintains (by carrying out routine maintenance procedures and fault rectification procedures) an effective and efficient level of operating performance on the various Communications Systems namely:
- UHF Base station, Mobile and Portable Radio equipment
- High-Density Microwave Radio Link System
- Transmission Network Management System
- Complex interconnected Radio Systems and Control equipment
- Data communications/transmission systems including multiplexers and modems
- Public Address equipment
- Power Supplies
- PLC, SCADA, and telemetry systems
- Earthing & Lightning protection systems
- CCTV Systems
- Alarm systems
- DAVS (Driver Assistance Video System) Cameras, Splitters, Transmitters etc.
- Analogue & Digital Recording equipment
- Perimeter & Intruder/Tamper Security systems
- Video Multiplexing & Control systems
- Public Information Systems and Displays, and
Telephony systems.
* Participates in the "On Call' Roster to provide out-of-hours support for all Communications Systems.
* Ensures relevant standards and procedures are applied to maintenance works.
* Carries out minor commissioning of new equipment, systems, and technology.
* Coordinates and liaises with client or contract technical personnel to assist in the rectification of faults as required.
* Investigates and reports on irregularities, faults, and actions taken at the system, equipment or board level.
* Monitors system and equipment performance.
* Investigates and analyses equipment failures and reliability.
* Investigates, reports, and repairs irregularities, faults, and actions taken at the system, equipment, or board level.
* Prepares and maintains system documentation, procedures reports, etc, and ensures all drawings are kept up to date.
* Maintains records of levels and locations of relevant equipment/systems spares.
Job Requirements
1. Core Competencies
* ACMA Open Cabler Registration with endorsements in fibre optic, structured and coaxial cabling.
* Relevant trade status or equivalent and possession of, or progress towards, a relevant trade qualification and/ or demonstrated experience in the below-listed communication systems.
* Considerable experience and demonstrated ability in the maintenance and fault findings of Communications Systems equipment including some or all of the following:
- UHF Base station, Mobile and Portable Radio equipment
- High-Density Microwave Radio Link System
- Data communications/transmission systems including multiplexers and modems
- Public Address equipment
- DC Power Systems
- Telephony Systems
- PLC, SCADA and telemetry systems
- Earthing & Lightning protection systems Power Supplies
- Copper Cable communication systems
- Optic Fibre and associated equipment
- Commercial or Industrial CCTV Systems
- Analogue & Digital Recording equipment
- Video Multiplexing & Control systems, and
- Perimeter & Intruder/Tamper Security systems.
2. Communication and Interpersonal
* Well-developed written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical drawings and plans and the use of appropriate test equipment.
3. Special Requirements
* Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations to verify physical fitness to perform the duties of the position.
* Provision of a current National Police Clearance certificate, dated 3 months or less from the date of application for the position.
* Possession of a current Western Australian "C' Class Driver's license or equivalent.
* Ability to work at moderate heights as well as in confined spaces.
* Ability to participate in call-out roster if required and work unsociable hours on occasion at short notice.
