11 August 2026.Malaysia. Penang LRT railway systems contract awarded
A 3.03bn ringgit railway systems contract for the 23·7 km Penang LRT Mutiara medium capacity metro line has been awarded to a joint venture of local companies Malaysian Resources Corp (90%) and Theta Edge (10%). The turnkey contract provides for the supply and maintenance, procurement, design, construction, testing and commissioning of railway systems, including signalling, power supply, telecommunications and ticketing equipment.

11 August 2026. United Kingdom. Alfreton Tunnel track renewal completed
Network Rail has successfully completed a track renewal project at Alfreton Tunnel, helping to deliver smoother and more reliable journeys for passenger and freight services between Sheffield and Nottingham. Engineers worked over the weekend of 8 and 9 August to renew nearly half a kilometre of track through the Derbyshire tunnel as part of ongoing investment in the railway. The project saw teams replace life-expired track components, helping to improve ride quality and reduce the likelihood of future faults on this section of railway.

10 August 2026. New Zealand. Auckland City Rail Link to Open for Passengers September 13
Auckland’s City Rail Link will open to passengers on September 13, launching a new rail network through the city centre with three redesigned train lines and new underground stations. The opening date gives passengers a firm start point for the 3.45-kilometre twin-tunnel railway between Waitematā and Maungawhau. The project also adds the new Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape underground stations and turns Waitematā from a terminus into a through station.

Etihad Rail has sold more than 70,000 tickets since launching passenger services in the UAE on 28 February 2026. On average, customers are booking journeys 12 days in advance. The figures, announced on 3 August, provide an early indication of passenger demand as the UAE’s national railway continues its introductory operational phase. Etihad Rail said booking patterns suggest passengers are increasingly planning journeys around rail services rather than using the train solely as a new travel experience.

The Brown Line metro project in Taoyuan has been launched with a groundbreaking ceremony, as a consortium of ST Engineering and Hyundai Rotem announced the award of a systems and rolling stock contract. Preliminary works started on Taoyuan MRT Brown Line with a ceremony on July 9. These include earthworks, the demolition of the Jisheng road overpass, and the relocation of trees.

The Jakarta MRT is advancing transport integration in Jakarta through infrastructure improvements at Dukuh Atas, where the MRT network connects with multiple public transport modes. The interchange area includes the Kendal pedestrian tunnel, which links passengers to surrounding transport services and supports transfers between different modes. The MRT is also constructing a large doughnut bridge at Dukuh Atas to improve connections.

10 August 2026. Singapore. Singapore confirms Cross Island Line Phase 3 extension to Gul Circle
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced the third phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL), extending the MRT line by approximately 10 km westwards from Jurong Lake District to Gul Circle. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the four new underground stations expected to open in the late 2030s. The extension will comprise stations CR20 to CR23, with CR21 providing an interchange with the Jurong Region Line and CR23 connecting with the East-West Line at Gul Circle.

Passengers and freight operators are once again running on one of Bavaria’s most important rail routes following the full reopening of the Nuremberg-Regensburg railway line after an extensive programme of modernisation works. From 1 August, normal passenger and freight services resumed across the corridor, which forms a key section of the European Rhine-Danube transport network and provides an important cross-border connection to Austria.

6 August 2026. Canada. Toronto Ontario Line Underground Works Advance with $4.3bn Contract
Webuild and FCC have signed a 2.7 billion EUR (4.32 billion CAD) contract to deliver a major underground section of Toronto’s Ontario Line metro project. Construction work is due to begin following completion of the project’s development and advanced design phase. The contract covers the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations (PTUS) package and has been awarded by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario to a joint venture led by Webuild, which holds a 50% stake, alongside FCC.

6 August 2026. Kenya. Nairobi Metro Moves Forward with Phase I Approval
The Nairobi City County Government has approved the implementation framework for the first phase of the Nairobi Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit System (Nairobi Metro). This marks the next step in plans to develop a new high-capacity public transport network for the Kenyan capital. Phase I of the project will focus on two initial sections: an underground route through Nairobi’s central business district (CBD) and the Eastlands Line, which is intended to improve links between one of the city’s busiest residential areas and the city centre.

Responsibilities:

Take the role of a Project Lead in project administration and design issues.
Lead and manage a team of architectural personnel to ensure efficient use of resources.
Prepare master programme / schedules and monitor project milestones.
