​18 January 2024. Australia. Work to begin on major Inland Rail upgrade

Construction is set to commence in late January on the Daroobalgie and Wyndham Avenue sites of the Stockinbingal to Parkes enhancement project, as part of the development of the Inland Rail. Inland Rail is a 1,600km freight rail line that will connect Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. The Stockinbingal to Parkes section project will make enhancements or modifications to specific sites of Inlalong the existing 170.3km of rail corridor in regional New South Wales.

18 January 2024. United States. New York’s Interborough Express Project Moves Forward

Under Governor Kathy Hochul’s direction, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is set to initiate engineering work for the Interborough Express (IBX). This new light rail service in Brooklyn and Queens will use the existing freight rail line from Bay Ridge to Jackson Heights. This route will connect ethnically and socioeconomically diverse neighbourhoods in the region. Once complete, the project could provide connections to up to 17 subway lines and would reduce travel times between Brooklyn and Queens by 30 minutes while serving 40 million riders a year.

17 January 2024. Philippines. Luzon inter-regional railway study underway

The Department of Transport and the national PPP Center have commissioned Systra and PwC Philippines/Isla Lipana & Co to undertake studies for the North Long Haul Inter-Regional Railway Project. This envisages the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of an inter-regional passenger and freight network of more than 800 km connecting the National Capital Region with three other regions on the island of Luzon, serving the Clark Freeport Zone, Poro Point, Laoag International Airport, Port Irene and Lal-lo Airport.

17 January 2024. Italy. Alstom secures 50 million contract for Florence tramway line

The Italian Municipality of Florence has awarded a 50 million euro contract to Alstom for the construction of essential infrastructure for Line 4.2 of the city’s tram system. The project, backed by funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, encompasses the track, catenary, substations, and lighting system, spanning over 11 kilometres with 24 stops. The first segment of the project, Line 4.2, valued at 50 million euros, will establish a connection from Le Piagge station to Campi Bisenzio. Source: RailTech.com

17 January 2024. Portugal. First tender released for Lisbon to Porto high-speed project

Portugal’s rail infrastructure management company Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has put out the tender for the first section of the Porto to Lisbon high-speed line. The initial tender for the first phase of the project, covering Porto to Soure, is looking for a €2bn ($2.1bn) investment through a public-private partnership (PPP) and will include the 70km Porto to Oiã section of the line, which features 11.6km of tunnels, 9.5km of bridges and 2.8km of viaducts.

17 January 2024. United Kingdom. Formula One tech deployed on Network Rail’s monitoring trains

British engineering company McLaren Applied has begun installing its 5G antennas on Network Rail’s infrastructure monitoring train fleets and activating its Formula One-derived Fleet Connect software. The connectivity technology will be used to enhance the data harvesting done by Network Rail’s 14 monitoring trains and allow them to use live data streams to send sensor readings of the state of the infrastructure on the UK’s rail network. The UK-based engineering firm is part of the wider McLaren family, which operates the second oldest and second most-successful F1 racing team.

16 January 2024. Australia. Ground penetrating radar used on vast Queensland network

Queensland Rail is using cutting-edge technology to map unseen parts of its huge network with ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology. This innovative project involves surveying a staggering 4,600 kilometres of railway track across Queensland, unveiling hidden insights into the infrastructure's current and future conditioning. Partnering with Zetica, a technology company specialising in subsurface imaging, the radar is mounted on to a track vehicle, which allows it to survey its surroundings and will monitor key sections of the track. This allows it to unearth valuable data previously obscured by ballast and earth.

15 January 2024. United Kingdom. Siemens Mobility Wins HS2 Contract for Station Management Systems

Siemens Mobility has been awarded a contract to deliver the station building systems for all HS2 stations: Curzon Street, Interchange, Old Oak Common and Euston. This contract is valued at 47 million GBP and will see Siemens Mobility deliver a fully integrated station information management system across the sites. To do so, it will deploy its Digital Station Manager technology for all stages of the passenger journey throughout the stations. This technology is already in use on London’s Elizabeth line.

Our client is seeking a Chief Engineer - Rail Planning and Transportation to initiate ideas and conducting studies to ensure the rail transit system is well integrated with the surrounding uses, best fits within the urban fabric, and fully satisfies the objectives of the Rail Agency.

Key Accountabilities:

* Ensures all Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental requirements pertaining to the project are in place and monitored as per the project management plan.

* Conduct feasibility studies for newly proposed rail lines or new technologies

* Review and evaluate the proposed transit station plans and their relations to the surrounding land uses and urban developments and identify necessary changes and adjustments.

* Prepares terms of reference for various newly initiated projects and studies related to Rail Planning & Development

* Studies reviews & recommendations on transportation policies, strategies, and plans.

* Conduct international benchmarking and studies related to different transportation planning issues in Dubai, and develop and present solutions as needed.

* Interprets and analyses environmental impact reports relating to transportation projects.

* Formulates long-range objectives relative to future land uses along the transit corridors and around transit stations.

* Ensures the compliance of project handover in accordance with the client's project management policies and processes.

* Initiates and manages/contributes to urban planning/ ridership studies/initiatives and Projects.

* Conducts field investigations, and compiles and analyzes data on demographic, economic, physical, and other factors affecting planning of transit corridors.

* Prepares and reviews cost-sharing analyses for rail projects related to Law No. 6.

Our client, who is in a consortium providing General Consulting (GC) services for Civil and Systems for Mumbai Line 10 (Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) and Line 12 (Kalyan to Talajoa), is looking for a Project Director to be responsible for overall management of the project.

He will lead the Stakeholder management and provide key directions to the team. He will be directly supported by Deputy Project Directors from each disciplines of Civil and Systems for co-ordination with Detail Design Consultant, Construction Contractors, D&B Contractors and MMRDA Personnel and will:

* Take decisions and give directions to facilitate completion of project without time and cost over runs without sacrificing quality and safety.

* Be responsible for administrative as well as technical control of GC team and its performance.

* Be responsible for proper implementation of provisions in the Terms of Reference and relevant manuals, rules and regulations as per contract and execution of work by contractor in accordance with specifications and time lines laid down in the contracts.

* Set up reporting system from Contractors and Senior GC Experts to his office and further to MMRDA. Submit progress reports to MMRDA.

Input for position - more than 48 man months full time

* Must have degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent qualification
